Creating the Perfect Smart Fit Goals

We all have goals, but how often can we say that we achieved them?

How many times have we been so close to achieving a goal and yet they always seem to slip right through our fingers? What’s even more frustrating is that some of us don’t even get that close. So, what can we do about this?

Well, we have to be smart about it. That’s right, S.M.A.R.T!

No, chanting these words surrounded by incense candles won’t help you achieve your goals. That would be too easy! Breaking it down a little further now…


Your goal must be specific; it must have a focus. Your goal can’t be too general, because then there’s no concrete evidence of determining whether we achieved it or not! I’d recommend writing down your goal, making it something tangible rather than just a dream.

Example of a non-specific goal: I want to get better at jogging.

Example of a specific goal: I want to jog twice a week.


Having a measurable goal is extremely important! It will greatly help you in staying motivated throughout your journey. You have to see that what you’ve been doing is a stepping stone towards the end. No one likes waiting, but we all get excited when we see the progress bar move!

Example of an unmeasurable goal: I want a summer bod!

Example of a measurable goal: I want to lose 15 pounds in 2 months!


Everyone has a good sense of what they can and cannot do, and none of us are super human (If you are then you probably wouldn’t be reading this). We all have limits and we need to make sure that we stay within them! Your goal can’t be un-realistic or else you’re just setting yourself up to be disappointed. It’s always better to get into the habit of accomplishing smaller, more realistic goals than it is to never accomplish one big one.

Example of an unachievable goal: I want to run a half-marathon in 1 hour.

Example of an achievable goal: I want to shave 20 minutes off my best half-marathon time.


Achieving your goal must be important to you be relevant to your current situation. You have to have the desire and internal motivation to achieve it. Make sure that what’s needed to achieve your goal must remain in your control. Will achieving this goal be worthwhile in the long run? Will you have the time to work on your goal even though you just started a new job? Will going through the steps hinder relationships with ones closest to you? These are the type of questions to consider.


Your goal must be time-bound, a date and time when your goal will be achieved! Having a time-bound goal pushes you to do everything you can to meet the deadline!

Example of a non time-bound goal: I want to learn how to play a song on the guitar.

Example of a time-bound goal: I want to learn how to play a song on a guitar in 1 month.

Whoa, we got pretty serious there, huh? Well, goal setting is serious business! If we don’t have goals then how can we progress? We need to have positive growth in mind. Strive for what you want in life. Always make sure that your goals are S.M.A.R.T!
